I believe RSS is a way of feeding information for the web. It's usually used for things like news or blogs. But, it looks like BigPumpkins.com is now allowing us to link our diaries to our personal websites or other feeds.
Am I right about this?
This page from Yahoo! does some explaining: http://news.yahoo.com/rss;_ylt=Ai37DQBBoMdkqRws9aIkuTys0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTA2cXY4cTA0BHNlYwNudA--
"What is RSS? RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication" -- it's a format for distributing and gathering content from sources across the Web, including newspapers, magazines, and blogs. Web publishers use RSS to easily create and distribute news feeds that include links, headlines, and summaries. The Christian Science Monitor, CNN, and CNET News are among the many sites that now deliver updated online content via RSS.
Yahoo! News offers dozens of RSS feeds you can read in My Yahoo! or using third-party RSS news reader software. Click here to find out more about RSS and how you can use it with Yahoo! News."

Can't get anything past you guys... good eyes!
We are rolling this out over the next couple of days. We have worked up an article on what it is and how it is most commonly used.

Isn't "xml" some kind of third rate defunct football league?

You can now keep track of your friends progress in the Diaries section by montioring the RSS feeds instead of having to browse through the long latest updates list.
If you want to only see what Kano, Duchezeu, and Brooks B. have in their diary you can do so by putting the three RSS URL's into your RSS News Reader: http://www.bigpumpkins.com/RSS/DiarySpecific.rss?27868 http://www.bigpumpkins.com/RSS/DiarySpecific.rss?18757 http://www.bigpumpkins.com/RSS/DiarySpecific.rss?26434
So now you don't have to login to BP, check through the long list, and browse through everything to see when they posted updates... Just check your RSS Reader.
If you want an RSS Feed that tells you of the latest updates for all the Diaries use this URL: http://www.bigpumpkins.com/RSS/diary.rss
You can use an RSS Reader (News Aggregator) to view updates in much the same way that you check your email. It could also be used in a variety of other ways including rebroadcasting/archiving depending on the license given by the original publisher.
Here is a list of News Aggregators you can use to read RSS feeds: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_news_aggregators

Over time heavy internet users have found that is cumbersome to have to navigate all over the internet to find the things they look at regularly. Having it all dropped into one place in quite convenient. At the same time the hyperlinks from within the RSS feeds can take you directly to the content itself for when you want to see the full details and related pages...

So is this a type of program that has to be downloaded and installed for RSS or does the browser read it automatically?

Typically, it is downloaded. Look for the Article in the "Odds and Ends" section off the main menu for resources.
