Whenever I try to do a search on the site, I can only use one word. Don't know if I'm missing something... of course, a better search function would be great!

I think that the search function may only work for exact matches. So, searching for "computer savy" will find this thread. But, searching for "savy computer" comes up with nothing. And, "computer savvy" comes up with a different thread entirely.
One option that you might try using is Google, or the Google Toolbar. Both allow you to search within a site using the syntax and power of Google. The toolbar is convenient because you can do the site search while still on the website in question.
