BigPumpkins.com has been growing in size every season since we started it. We have now reached a point where we have nearly exceeded the capacity of our current server. John and I want to purchase a new server to increase performance, capacity and the functionality of the site. We have resisted, and continue to resist becoming a "subscription" website. Instead we have decided to raise funds by selling a commercial video product. Our plan is to do this under the heading "BPTV". ALL profits from this DVD will go back into the website.

BPTV is going to be an "entertainment" DVD for giant pumpkin growers. Some of the content will include patch
tours, the pumpkin explosion, the pumpkin drop, weighoff footage (featuring Charlie's 1337), and "video" grower diaries. There will also be several slide shows of still pictures including some from the website. In our opinion, the production quality will be high, including quality sound, special effects, etc.

In order to plan our production lot size and timing we would to know the following:

1. Do you have a DVD player or plan on buying one by Christmas?

2. Would you buy one of these DVD's for around $25.00?

Thanks,
Ken and John

Might I suggest you encorporate a "donate" portion on the site.
I for one would be willing to donate to the BP.com cause.
I believe that may others would do so as well. Seeing as how so many of us frequent the site and how much time we spend here, this would be a relatively inexpensive form of entertainment.
Also considering the generosity of growers, I think this would be a good avenue to generate some funds for the site.
It is a treat to come here and NOT have any pop-ups.

I feel as if I owe the site a little something for all of the information I have "taken".

Thanks Ken & John

What a great idea to keep this site free! Count me in guys. This is the most informative site on the net for giant pumpkins. You guys do a great job here on this site and I can't wait to see the DVD. BTW is there going to be a "Best of" section in the slide show from growers submissions?

You guys have done a great job with this site. I want to thank you for all the hard work, the seeds you have made available, the friendships I have made. I now have a personal best going with a seed I got from Big Pumpkins. This is a seed I wouldn't have been able to get elsewhere.
I would be very willing to make a donation also.
I think another good idea would be to have a seed auction. I believe the members would be happy to support Big Pumpkins with seed donations for the auction. Your site is such a good and helpful site that I believe the members would be glad to bid generously. It would be a lot of fun.
Thanks for all you guys do,

Click "Electronics" Then click "DVD Single Disc Players".

Prices for an "Apex" (never heard of it?) start at $53.00. I doubt you'd find a VCR that sells for much less & would probably be lower quality. Shop around some. I picked up a good DVD burner for $189.00 last month but some are even cheaper than that. Deals are out there.

I agree with One Dude to have the auction for the seeds. This way the site could get more money and the fun would be great. To stimulate donators of the seeds some percent of the auction price should be given to them. The auction could last until the season start so nobody will miss his seed of choice.

Ken, in a truly honest oppinion i believe yoa are a genius with this idea but hear me out. I think 25 dollars is a bit much for some pumpkin footage when a better Christmas gift may be a Bobier 723 UOW, or maybe money towards tarp, five gallons of Neptune's, or even a yard of refined compost. I think you shoulod follow through on its release but rethink the price, and then you may sell more but peopole like myself call bigpumpkins.com our homepage and a fee for site use may hurt the moral of growers like myself. Think a little about other methods like seed auctions or clothing or lower the price but 25 $ is enough to feed one child in Guatamala for a whole year. $20 is another story and i will buy if that is the case but who cares about blowing up pumpkins. Jees I know a contractor with a crane and i am sure that can't be that entertaning but plain retarded.

Please review my thought above. Thank You

You are contradicting your self victory gardener. I feel $25 dollars is a drop in the bucket. They are not asking or telling you to purchase one. They are trying to come up with something to keep this a free site.
I feel the use of the diary and all the photos we submit take lots of memory. The Chatroom, the Free Seeds in the fall. The ability to post messages and have the reply on the same page. Would well be worth a $25.00 membership a year. Then again I am a BigPumpkins.com fanatic, and would pay whatever to keep this site the way it is. So if John amd Ken want to do this, I am all for it. victory gardener....if you're so worried about the kids in guatemala, why are you wasting your money buying seeds, tarps, and fertilizer? i agree with shannon, you are contradicting yourself. 25 bucks is not out of line (perhaps more than a kick in the bucket for a college student like me, but not out of line). DVD's are relatively new technology, and ever heard of inflation???

however, i think your idea of clothing is good. perhaps a few new shirt designs or something would get some more sales and make money for the website. i myself plan on buying BP apparel in the near future.

Yes, we hope to have it ready for the holidays.

The majority of users do not want a subscription. This is an OPTIONAL thing. This thread was created to get a feel of how many would sell so we expected some "No's". The price is not set yet but we do know the price of the hardware and software we want. We are just trying to answer the questions: Can we sell 100 of them? Can we sell 200 of them? How about 500?

10/21/2003 2:53:56 PM

Tremor

Ctpumpkin@optonline.net

Judging by the 100 responses it looks like 100 to this websites regulars is easy. Just make sure to also post it's availability on Mallorn & the other "garden lists" & 200 should be cake. I would burn 500 anyway. Don was selling his autographed hardcover for $29 at Topsfield like they were going out of style. If anyone resented his decision to use a format that doubled the selling price of his book, I didn't hear them complaining very loud. Offer some of the extra discs to growers associations at a discount so they can sell them for a profit as "between seed filler" during the auctions in the off season.
You might even hock some on ebay as a no-bid "Buy it Now Only" offer. Lot's of gardeners tune in there.

10/21/2003 9:48:59 PM

Great idea Steve, a lot of clubs buy Don's book at a discount price and sell them to members and such for regular price which would help the clubs and you guys out.

I like the CD idea because you do get something for you money. I don't know what others would think about this. What does the new software and hardware cost. Divide it by the 100+ people that just responded. If that isn't too much, maybe we can all just pull together and get the server. I'm sure more would also donate. We could probably get you what you need to keep this going.

I'll third it. We can wait. We get plenty of benefit from this website as it is. If it weren't for this website I probably never would have met any of my new Pumpkin growing friends. This is by far the greatest online Pumpkin resource. AGGC is cool for what it is. And the various association websites will be good for the associations members. But somehow this website ties everything together in a way the others just can't.

If I had to give up all my pumpkin resources but one, this is the one I'd keep. It's the people here.

And I'll still by the DVD when it comes out.

Thank You Ken & John.

Another Idea (might have been mentioned already)might be to send a seed or 2 for every donation of $20 dollars.

Hi John and Ken,

It's been a long time, and I'm just tuning back in. I'd buy a DVD. Did this project get going? Hope you guys are well. I'm now a nearer neighbor...we moved from Philadelphia to Providence last summer. No pumpking growing room or time for it, though. Bummer.

You might want to give people the option of supporting BP.com in several ways: 1. Send in a donation of any size to________. (List the address.) 2. Offer sliding scale subscriptions.($500 to $25.) 3. Buy the video.

Another way that I think people might like to help is if you ask them to sponsor BP.com. You might offer yearly sponsorship levels at different rates. You could even make the sponsorship levels relate to pumpkin growing. ie: the top sponsorship level might be called the Howard Dill Level and you could sponsor at $500. The levels would go down from there with the smallest sponsorship being $25. You might sweeten the pot by offereing good genetic seeds at the different levels.(Donated by the growers.) The sponsorships would allow you to keep doing the great work you are doing without all the hard work of making the video. What do you think?

To sum up the posts I read it seems that three threads seem to emerge, First, answer to the questions, YES and YES. Second, Donations: seeds, etc. Third, Stuff for sale: Hats, (ball caps and straw would both go well-could even be resold for those having "Pumpkin Patch" days at the fair or on your farm) Shirts (Tee shirts silk screened and Regular button up shirts with embrodiery)Recipe books (get anyone who wants to to send in recipies, compile them, there are publishers who will print for free in anticipation of sales.
Personally, I think that all three can fly. Chuck the Alpaca Rancher

I would definitely buy the video and/or pay a subscription fee per year to the site. Not sure what the number of users are here but seems to me a $25.00 fee per user would be enough to operate. By the way...what exactly is a "sliding scale subscription?

I know this won't be popular, but paid subscriptions kill an internet community.

I'd buy a DVD.

And, whatever you do, do not sell banner ads to companies. They just clutter up the site and slow it down, adding frustration.

Can you clean out the old posts? Dump old pictures, forum discussions, and diaries to give yourself more space?
