If what I think is true, that the 845 and 723 are the same cross, why is the 723 so much more popular? I observed that nine seed packets, one of which is the 845(same as the 723 geneticaly, and 122 lbs bigger), is going for $40 at the auction, but only two seeds from the 723 are already at $200. Obviously the 723 must be better, but my question is why??????? Thanks,
Mike

so the 845 has only been grown twice, or has only produced two worthwile pumpkins? I guess the 723 is proven, and the 845 is not??????? Mike

I'm sure it has been grown more than twice. It's just produced 2 noteworthy fruit. By producing a 1260 lber it can be considered proven. And I'm sure after the coming season the 845's stats will increase as it will be grown more due to Craigs fruit....Paul

paul's examples pretty much hit the nail on the head.....but at the same time, the 723 it seems was much more widely planted then the 845. they are now both "proven" seeds, with the exception of the 723 being "proven" over and over and over again. i have yet to see a pic of the 865 offspring from the 845 bobier, but a good portion of the 723 offpring are appealing in that not only do they get big, but they also look pretty nice!! ive heard rumor's that the color of the 1260 was a little "squashy" (not that i should be one to talk! :) )i'm confident that you'll see plenty of 845's grown this year, and it may very well prove to be an amazing seed, but if you want results, and you want then now, just look at the track record that paul provided us, and the choice (at least for me anyway, and i have them both), is pretty clear.

As Paul pointed out, its all in the numbers. The 723 has proven to do well...real well, over the last two growing seasons. It really didn't get much play in the first year but those that did grow it did real well. The 845 did well last year. You can expect the 845 to get more play this year because of what it did last year and because it was readily available for around 25 dollars this fall at P+P seeds.Add success and availability and you get a seed that everyone grows. If everyone does well with the 845 this year, expect 723-like prices at the auctions next year. Its interesting to note that the year 2000 results on the 723 were 1079,1096,700something and a 400something and you saw what play it got in its second year. Now look at the 712 Kuhn in its first year ...1100something,1000something, 850 some-thing, etc....see any similarity? ...anyone wanna guess how much play that seed gets this year? or what its gonna go for at auction next year if it does well? Its also a matter of availability, less seeds around each year pushes up the value .........G
ps....they were both 935 x 865 crosses. The 845 was bigger than the 723, and the pollinator of the 845 did better than the pollinator of the 723....hmmm....could be that the 845 will do better than the 723 !!

Mike, The 845 Bobier in the auction is from (99), Parents are 827 Holland (92)x 935 Loyd (97). The 845 Bobier that you speak of is from (00), same cross as the 723. Hope that helps, Steve
