The tan part on the tip end of most seeds forms a point in one direction. I noted the direction on one seed I planted just out of curiosity and it appears so far the main vine will go the opposite direction of the point.I just thought it was interesting may be old news to some.

so, you have mentioned the directionality of the seed itself? i have wondered as to whether or not the seed should be planted with that slightly-turned tip pointing upward or downward, usually when it's too late and the seed is already in my tweezers going into the SS mix! hmmm, you may have a good POINT there...if we could determine even earlier-on which way it will grow.... heck, what's next, a sonogram??? lol---interesting! inform! inform! let us know of any further developments. I ment if the seed was laying on its side the tan part as it goes to the tip of the seed it usually points one way or the other, I marked which way it was pointing and planted with the tip straight down. The first true leaf was on that side when it germanated. I just planted another one and marked it , so I will see what it does.I am just looking for a way of direct planting with the possibility of the main going in the direction I want.

At the bottom of the seed are two holes. The deeper, more recessed hole indicates the side the first true leaf will point. Vine growth opposite the first true leaf.... I can't take credit for that one: Chris Anderson figured that out and reported it on the mallorn list back in 1997...

I actually experimented with this concept during the winter. I didn't post the results in my diary because I didn't want to be labled a crackpot...LOL Unfortunately, the tests revealed that it wasn't true. At first it was inspiring, because the first few seeds did ,in fact, open first true as expected. I was very excited about my discovery, but later, my hopes were dashed as other seeds opened opposite the way I had predicted. I was unaware someone else had tried it. I revealed some of my findings with another grower.
