I was wondering if us Southern Growers should start our seeds later than the Northern Growers. The two acre patch of "Mammoth Golds" I had in 1989 yeilded 2500 beauties a couple weeks before halloween. I direct seeded July 18. I'm sure they were 100 day pumpkins. What do you think?

I'm willing to bet the Mammoth Golds are much hardier than AG's, thus your high yield. The AG's don't handle the heat & the bugs that come with it as well as other varieties so I would think you should start earlier than us in the North....Paul

The saying is from what I have heard is that the hotter the climate is the shorter the life span of an Atlantic giant. But the faster it puts on weight. Dont know if this would hold true about the other kinds of pumpkins. I started my Giants along with a few other growers from father north than me, last year at the same time. Mine seemed to mature about 2 wks. early here in WV.

you are right paul,,but by starting eariler,,will they last long enough for halloween,or a weigh off??I'm gonna plant one early and later....Just for experminting...

I believe Paul is right. Last year I planted late and the pumpkins didn't turn out as well as I thought they would.

i planted about 2 acres of howdens last year about 1 1/2 months too early and a bunch of them rotted in the patch.. on the other hand i turned my compost pile over 3 days ago and found one that was still as solid as a rock?? go figure??

It's hard to resist putting in your pumpkins early down here because the weather is so warm but I don't think it is a good idea. I started early April last year...was pollinating June 1 and rotting by August.

Have you ever tried fish/seaweed? I used it the year I grew my 378 lber & it was picked Sept. 14th, weighed
Oct.17th ( at 378 lbs so I know it was heavier than that when picked) & it was not carved until Oct 30th. Even though it was carved it was still rock solid on Thanksgiving.....Paul

No!! It weighed 378 at the weighoff, so I know it weighed more when I picked it...
