Is it too late to start seeds and hope to grow gourds and small pumpkins? Theres still 4 months to go til october but am not sure if they will fully mature.

Yes, I would say it is too late in PA to start seeds.

You need 120-150 days with no frost. That would be Nov. 11. Probably too late. Peace Wayne

If you just want small pumpkins, you could give it go. I mean, what's to loose? If you do, hit them with fast acting N right away, then high P early to get blooms quickly, and high K after fruit set to start them ripening right away. Don't shade the fruit too much. It's a long shot though.

latest i've started one was june 3rd. got a couple ~350 for the guy with very good care.

you might be able to do it, if we have a warm september.

the other thing you could consider is to start prepping the patch now for next year. seed down a lot of buckwheat, chop and till in just before flowering, add some leaves and manure, do it again, chop and till late september, and reseed with winter rye. should give your soil fertility a good jump on things for next season.

WAIT TIL NEXT YEAR

So. Maine

Dar, go to twilleyseed.com and check out the ProGold varieties. They need 90 to 95 days start to finish. ProGold 200,& 510's are small to medium in size, ( 10 lb. for the 200's , 25 lb. on the 510's). In Maine I plant first week of June & pick ripe pumpkins 2nd week of Sept. Get going & order by phone ASAP, plant by July 18th or before & pick around Oct 20th or so. Good Luck.
