I heard you should plant your seed 1 inch deep, is that one inch deep from the top of the seed or the bottom? Thanks.

I always do it from the top of the seed. Tom Beachy

One inch from the top of the seed would be right! Chris

I plant my seeds FLAT about 1.5 inches deep. They almost always emerge with the seed casing in the ground. If you plant them with the sprout end down, most emerge with the seed casing attached.

If starting the seed outside 1 to 1 1/2 in. would be right. When I start them in a peat pot I'll put the seed right to the top, I want as much starting mix under the seed as possible more room for roots. Bob W

If using a 4 in. pot with the seed 1 in. down and the seed 3/4 to 1 in. long, that only 2 to 2 1/4 in. of mix....half the pot is gone. Bob W

Pumpkinpicker, You need a wider and deeper pot. Roots are out 3 t0 4 inches in all directions 2 days after the plant emerges.

Brian- I have heard of people making their own pots out of newspaper. maybe someone can give us more info on it. I use 1-2 gallon plastic pots. i cut the bottom off. and use the top for the bottom. the taper goes down so the pot is larger at the bottom. cut a square piece of hard plastic to set it on. duct tape it - just to hold it in place. when you transplant- you slide the square out - holding the opening with your hand. set it in the ground where you want it. (line up the plant direction) then just pull straight up to remove the pot. I know some other growers who use this method too. it works well and you can reuse your pots. gordon

Makes sense, I'll have to find some pots and experiment with it.

Find some empty 36 ounce coffee cans with the plastic lids. Remove the other end of can just like the top. Cut the can, one cut, length wise. Spread the can apart at the cut, not to much, just enough the when you close it back, it wants to spring back open. Duct tape it to hold the cut edge together. Put lid on the bottom and grow your seedling. To transplant remove lid from bottom, set in hole and cut tape and slide can off. Roots are not disturbed in any way. cut a couple holes in lid for drainage. Kenny
