This is my first year growing pumpkins and I'm just wondering when should I start a seed, and when should I put it outside?

Start about May 1. Put out about as soon as they emerge in the house usually between 4 and 8 days. In Ontario it is necessary to have a little early season protection fom the elements for example a 4 x 4 x 4 greenhouse. Hope this helps.

Keith, I start May 1st also. These folks are fools for starting at this point. Do it to soon, your fruit will be loosing weight by weigh-off time. In northern Minnesota, I need a simple heat lamp to add heat in evenings for my plants. Try to keep temps above 50 degrees F at all times to get maximum growth. I build a 4'x6' hot house from 2"x2" lumber. Works and lasts for years. Best of luck. Pumpkinpiper

All 8 of my plants came up in 4 days or less, i used a mini green and a heated hydroponic pot all in totaly sterile soiless medium. I found a great source at www.zacshomehydroponics.com and they will send you free information and give you help with your growing problems.

Here in the mid-Atlantic, I shoot for Cinco de Mayo for plants hitting the ground from indoor starts. One has to commit that planting as early as this or ealier mandates a commitment to some type of pumpkin shelter once your keeper is on the vine. I have had problems of planting early and harvesting in August because the skin prematurely ripened and didn't allow for additional growth. Plan now for what type of sun shelter you will provide.
