How well do you folks think that the coconut matting that is used to line outdoor plant hangers would work at the bottom of the coffie can instead of plastic? Could'nt you just cut it to size for the can and leave the matting in place and slide the can off the plant and cause less disturbance to the plant when transplanting?

I would be careful with anything that might disturb root growth. I used peat pots last year that were supposed to compost once put into the soil. When removing the plants in fall, the roots had made their way around the pots which were still there - not composted at all. Will never use them again.

i poke lots of holes in my peat pots to help break them down and give young roots a place to get out

Good point about the root growth. I was only thinking of disturbing the plant when it is put into the ground. the matting would probly cause more problems for the roots than taking the plant out of the container. thanks
