I have two valuable seeds I bought at auction this year that haven't put out a radicle yet after 72 hours in the germination box. Is it time for concern yet? I filed them, soaked them for 4 hours in 3% hydrogen peroxide and put them in moist paper towels in a small plastic container at 85 degrees. No sign of a radicle yet. How long would you give them before you write it off as a bad investment?

Give 'em up to a week, some seeds are just slow starters.

I've been reading alot about folks going into meltdown mode over seeds that don't pop after just a few days and I also see some very nice seeds being given up on and trashed for no reason. The fact is, it CAN take 10-12 DAYS for some stubborn seeds. If they aren't too wet and are kept warm, they WILL germ eventually, some are just more stubborn than others. I had a 1260 2 years ago, 10 days, no movement. But I left it in the germ box and on day 11, it fired off and grew into a viable plant. In 4 years of growing, I have only had 1 failure and I believe my inexperience in technique and lack of patience wasted this seed that I trashed.
So the bottom line is folks, be patient, they'll go for you 95% of the time, it just may not be on the schedule you want but instead when it's ready. And if you feel you need to start a backup, go for it, but leave the original for a while longer, it may surprise you.

Bill, very good advise. Back in 1996 had a 567.5 Mombert take about 9 days to germinate and the temptation to keep taking a peek to see what was going on in that poting soil was really bugging me. I just let it be and it did it's thing and woke up when it wanted to.

i was just about to throw in the towel on my 805Pukos.
after 9 days i was drinking heavy and thoughts of planting jack-b-littles.
but low-n-behold on the 10th day the sun was shinning and my 805 was up and looking good.
so dont panic yet.

That's consoling advice. I checked a couple of my seeds(in wet paper towels and a plastic baggie) after 24 hrs., and was worried, after no signs of germination. I guess I need a little patience.
Good luck Jim! I'd have some back-ups started(if you don't already) just in case they don't germinate. I hope your investment pays off.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. I'll cool it for a while longer and be patient. I'm waiting on an 805 Pukos and a 500 Northrup.
Regards, Jim

Mine have gone anywhere from 16-17 hours, to like 11-12 days. Never know, those were all in the same method. Be patient, and follow all of their advice. Good Luck! AleX Noel.

I had an 845 Bobier take 12 days to germinate last year while it's replacement popped on the same mat in 72 hours. The point being that both seeds still germinated.

How old are these seeds & what are they?

The seeds in question are the 805 Pukos 2000 and the 500 Northrup 2004. I started both on 4/25 and still no sign of a radicle.

I finally gave up on the 805 Pukos. Dug up the seed and it was rotten. It had been 30 days since I first started. I had bought it at one of the club seed auctions this winter. I know they don't come with a guarantee but I'm just disappointed I won't get to grow it this year.
