I have a seed that has a small crack in the side. It goes all the way to the inside, but it is very small. Anyone out there ever successfully germinate a seed like this?

I am going to try it anyway... but just trying to figure out what my odds are...

Cracks aren't a problem. Cracks may even help by letting water in & permitting the seed coat to come off easier.

If you want some cracked seeds to test germinate, let me know. I have hundreds from last year that were either split down the center of the face of the seed, or along the edge. open pollinated or low weight stuff that won't get planted anyway, so they're expendable.

I have heard that seeds with cracked seed coats may have a shorter "shelf Life" than ones without. Just to keep this in mind, if you have two of the same seeds, germinate the cracked one first.

I have grower with a crack upside his head.....It goes all the way izside too..... huh LongBeard....He appears to be able to successfully germinate......lol

You know...there is a remote chance that a cracked seed started to germinate in the pumpkin. If that was the case it wouldn't be any good now. If the seed coat cracked as it dried then little harm should come of it if stored properly.

I germed one last year that was cracked and 2 years old. No problems at all.

the seed in question actually got cracked in a bubble on its way to me in the mail... so I doubt it was anything natural that cracked it, but I'll still give it a shot.

I noticed that too sometimes Pete, I talked with the Lady at the post office, they try to run the damn things threw the sorter which wants to smash the seeds. Bigger bubbles or fat bubbles wont fit so they have to hand sort them which is why they wanted a bit more postage so they wouldnt force them through......a single stamp on a small bubble might get smushed. I used to work on those machines......

If you are careful, you can take the entire seed shell off and it will still germinate. Just don't hurt the thin green layer just under the outside shell of the seed.
