We all get the itch to get things started but 5 days is the longest I'd leave a seedling stuck in a pot. These things grow FAST & once the root bottoms out & turns around the pot it will never be the same again.

The roots had already reached the bottom of a 14" pot with 12" of soil.

what's happens to a pot bound plant?

They take much longer to establish & lose time doing so. Starting too early often has the exact opposite effect than desired. The earliest starts often end up behind those started at the correct time.

A really pot bound plant might never form a good tap root so it will never perform to it's potential.

The idea is to have as little deviation of the mature rooting pattern as possible.

I figure April 25th is a good time...if I get some non-germinators it still leaves time to start a second batch.
Those started April 25th will go in the ground May 2.

Tremor, when you say, into the ground on 5-2, is that in a peat pot, or is it taken out of a pot of some kind and placed directly into the ground.

That's when I like to plant them in the ground here in CT. Some start earlier or later depending on their goals & nerve. LOL

Like Mark (Milford) said 4/25 start seed ~ 5/2 in the ground. One week is enough time.

Average last frost dates, access to heated cloches, etc should all help guide the grower. When in doubt ask a local grower.
