One of my seedling that just come up has parts of the cots were it seems to be rotten. Each cot has a third of the leaf missing from rot. I think the plant will be fine in the long run but was wondering what causes this? Does this seem to happen to seeds as they get older? The seed is from 2000.

It's possible that pythium may have been active but this is often fatal if untreated. Could also have just been a fluke. Older seeds are probably not more "prone" to disease but if they take longer to germinate & sprout they remain in a susceptible state longer. We might also be tempted to over-water the slow starter which also invites seedling fungal diseases.

Thanks Tremor, I realized I had my heat pad plugged into my timer for the lights and it was shutting down for 7-8 hours everynight. I feel like an idiot but my best seed did sprout so not all is lost. The seeds were soaked in Root Guardian a Biofungicide for soilborne diseases that is suppose to help protect against Pythium,Rhizoctonia,Fusarium,Cylindrocladium, and Thielaviopsis. Its active microbe Trichoderma harzianum strain T-22.
