i have read that you can tell witch direction the vine will go when the plant comes up ,how can you tell this. thanks paul

It will grow across from the first true leaf. First two are cots, next leaf is the first true. Face that leaf in the direction you want the vine to grow.

type in vine direction in the site search window. there are a few old threads that cover this. i think you have it right in the first part of your answer rob, but the second part should state face that leaf opposite the way you want it to grow. if you plant on a slight angle towards the way you want it to go it helps also.

From what I have observed, the second true leaf is usually a little bigger and heavier. That is why the vine will go in the direction of the second true leaf.

If I have had a problem in the patch and need to plant very young plant that hasn't developed the first true leaf yet I make sure to plant the seedling at an angle pointing the direction in which I want it to grow. I actually do this with all my plantings and seems to work quite well.

Aim that first true leaf AWAY from the direction you want the vine to run. Then plant the seedling at a 30-45° angle to make sure the vine falls down & runs the way you want it to go. The angle also greatly reduces the chance of the vine kinking.

Thanks all. Excellent point Tremor. The vine is very thick, heavy and brittle. It will snap or kink as he states if it is left in the air. They grow fast so angling is a good way of reducing risk. You can also use tomato stakes to prop up the vine and give it a slow path to the ground.

Some time in the past, I read about two little pin holes on one side of the seed...(I think), and that this was a clue as to which direction the plant would grow?!?! Was this something I imagined, or the night... sometime in 10/68 that I saw the UFO that said Wallace on the side??? LOL Peace, Wayne
