I file down my seeds and I soak them in some water for an hour or two. Then i put them in a paper towel , then in a bag, then i place them on top of a heating pad thing...on low...and when I come back the next day, the seeds split along the side. Does anyone know whats wrong?

I had the same problem when I was practicing with seeds last winter. My conclusion was that I was using too much water. I tried filing then soaking in water 5 min. or so, then placing in warm, moist potting soil. I've had good luck this way.

If you put your seeds directly on a heating pad, it probably got too hot. I did the same thing 2 years ago and got no germination. Repeat what you did and put a folded towel between the heating pad and your bag with the seeds in it. I think it will work fine.

Bocky, check out this picture in John D's diary. It shows just what I think might be wrong.

I hate to admit this, but last year I fryed every one of my first pic seeds, no towel between the bag and the mat, this winter as a test I did all of the above ,fileing, soaking, wet papper towel, baggie, every seed germinated, then I thought was this just a fluke? so I went and did it again, had the same good results. Now as long as I don't change anything I feel confident that all will go well and I will be able to start them when I want to and will have an earlier start. H-K-J <;-)

Try Ailt's direct seed starting method (in the How-To section) for fast results. Paper towel/baggie on the computer monitor= cotyledon emergence in 19 hours. Keep it simple and follow the basics. No need to file or soak.

keep in mind, and it has been warned about before, that you'll have to leave your monitor on all the time, and covering up the vents with plastic baggies could cause a problem for your expensive monitor--those vents are there for a reason, so exercise caution in this matter, please!
