Okay, I've been reading the message board and have formulated an idea somewhat. I need to know if it will kill my pumpkins or not!

So, what if I built a little greenhouse out of straws and plastic wrap to start the pumpkin in? Would I still need the light 2-3" above the plant?

Most folks use a "germination box".Mine is an old cooler with a small heat mat(used for warming seed flats) in the bottom, so my seeds germinate in the dark. You want them to be warm, the lightbulb would be for heat at this point.

Once the seed germinates move it under a light source, a flourescent "shop light" works fine for me.I do keep the light a couple of inches above the plant.

I start my plants in a 4" pot & repot them to a 1/2 gal ice cream container within 2 or 3 days, these plants grow roots very quickly & you don't want it to become root bound. Then it's in the ground 2 or 3 days later in a hoop house heated with a heat lamp to keep it warm. Start your seeds 1 week before planting time.

Check out some of the grower diaries, there are many variations, but this "lowtech" version works for me.

Be careful with the lightbulb & plastic...sounds like a fire hazard to me...safety first! Good luck & I hope you grow a big one!!
