OK. This was going to be the main seed start date for me. Now I'm having second thoughts. Waiting one more week could provide an advantage if things stay this cool. So I'm wondering what all the other Southern New York, NJ, & CT growers are doing. We're on the edge of zones 6b & 7a so there are plenty others out there too. Right through southern PA & OH.

Thanks,
Steve in CT

Steve.....Look at the long range forcast. Draw your own weather conclusions. I agree with you we seem to be hanging onto a cold one here. You have coldframes. The way this thing looks to me is that we should expect possible frost right up to and through May's full moon.

I'm your cold five reporter from the Western skys of your Pumpkindom Weather Opp. :) Anyone can report it. Forcasting is another thing indeed.

I too was planing on starting this weekend but the memory of those very cold May nights have helped make my decision to wait an extra week. I don't think my ground has warmed up that much yet either. I have the hoop house in place so that should help...CHris

Hi Chris! I just spoke with Bart. He wants to start soon. Dave Garrell has already. I just finished the greenhouse today (pics soon). It was very hot in there & the soil is warming as I write! I'll cover the 2 mini-houses that Dennis made for me this week since I ran out of 6 mil plastic covering the greenhouse (I made it bigger than originally planned). They're both heated.
So I think I'll start on Tuesday since Monday is going to be too busy. I'll start to test the soil temps before hand just to make sure.

My regular email server is back on line.

Pumpkin season! I am so psyched!

Here's something I learned a while back, that works quite well. If you have spring peepers (frogs) in your area, count ahead 6 weeks after they start peeping. This date should be close to your last frost. Mine started 6 weeks ago today, there should be no more killing frosts in my area after today. (I still use hoop houses to warm things up.)

hey that's a cool method, i'll try it out. i'll be counting on may 22nd to 27. (i was out of town for 5 days when they started peeping)

Starting today. Spring Peepers are cool. My homemade pond has a couple frogs that I relocated, but no Peepers.

Note to self: Find & kidnap some Peepers!

What John? No 840? I have one of yours going right now. It may end up at my son's school. We'll see.

Started mine on Sunday here in Trumbull CT. Checked on them tonite and most have roots. I will put in the garden most likely this weekend in greenhouses I built. The plants should be fine if you keep the greenhouses closed. At night if the temps drop to the low 40's I would cover the plants with buckets, still in the greenhouse, and cover the buckets with a blanket. They should be fine.
