Never to small (josh)

Sparks, NV

hi this is josh as you may know i live in sparks NV ok well we go by this old folk legend (i guess)that you only plant in the garden when all the snow is off of pevein MT.well that all ways works out because anything before that it might freeze and kill your plants. ok so the snow usually melts all of in the middle of may around there so i was wanting to know how long it takes to get the pumpkin plant 2feet long becuse i want to plant it when it pretty big. thanks so much any advise would be great. Josh, you need to have yer pkn plants sprouted less than 10 days b/4 yer planting date. Don't even attempt to have em 2 ft long b/4 planting outside!!! Unless yer starting em in a 50 gallon peat pot!!! Massive root growth is a major key to a giant, and you will do major damage to yer root system, tryin to grow a 2' main vine indoors!!! My advice would be to build a small...3'x5' inclosure (mini greenhouse) to protect yer small plants early in the season!!! Peace, Wayne

Josh,I put my plants in two gallon buckets and transplant(put outside) at what I call the three leaf stage. The forth true leaf is just a baby at this time. That takes 14-18 days to get them that size in ideal conditions. If I let them get any bigger(such as a two foot main vine) they would get severely stunted as wayne described. If you have a short season youll get the most benefit by using a temporary greenhouse/cloche to keep the plant from freezing and it will warm your soil temps.Colorado has similar weather as nevada-we keep our plants under the cloches till early june and it gains one to two weeks.

Josh,

I'm in Sparks and I planted mine 3 plants outside this week. I have hoop houses to help keep them warm at night. So you can start the seeds anytime inside.
