Just wondering what could happen if my seeds where started on the 15th or 16th. I usually transplant the seedlings in gallon pots after they break ground. Can anyone tell me their expiriences.

Kenny, after filing, and soaking (less than 2 hrs) I plant seeds directly into 1 gallon plastic pots. Less root disruption than transplanting from smaller pots. Yes, it means you have to have a larger germination chamber, but I only do 3 or so plants!! Best of luck & grow em big!!! Peace, Wayne
PS...a new diary entry...can't remember who?? duh...showed massive roots in the bottom of 4" peat pots after 36 hrs. of pushin dirt!!!!

Ive never had any issues with plants being pot bound. I have a small germination chamber thats just a jiffy chamber with heating mat. It works pretty well. I just wanna make sure im not hurting the pplant. Sounds like good advice. I have to make one for next year.

Transplant as little as possible, like PW says go to a 1 gallon pot on kins,This seems a little early for kins Kenny, they grow fast,Were staring on the 27th in Michigan,I will use like a 1 Qt pot on melons,But will get in ground within 2 weeks,Will start Melons today, they grow much slower & I have to get a jump on superman, lol,I think I will let 1 plant get root bound to see what it does,I think the root bound fear is over rated!!Maybe a 291???

I've started my seeds over the weekend (file, soak, paper towel and bag method). They sprouted and then I put them in 3" peat pots with seed starting soil. However, this is my first time using seed starting soil and they haven't popped up out of the ground. I think I wasn't giving them enough water because I dug one up and it was dry down where the sprout was. I've had better luck with using potting soil on my practice seeds. Anyone else use seed starting soil? If so, do you wet it first before putting your seed in?

In my last post... I meant to say "they didn't pop up out of the soil" not ground. :-)

Ive never used seed starting media. I like the miricle grow potting soil. I buy a few big bags of it throw some myco in a giant bucket and mix.I dont add any water to the mix as the pete pots have already been soaked in water. I put under a heating chamber and after coming home from work the top of the dome of my chamber is foggy and I can smell the warm soil. After the seeds break ground I transplant the small plants to gallom pots adding myco and little water if any. The soil should have adaquate moisture. I then put them under florecent lighting for 12 hours about 3 inches from the plant. In the day when the suns out I give them some sun slowly extending the time they spend. I keep them in the shed at night where its about 50 degrees. Also I put a fan on them for a few hours to get them strong. Im not sure if that works but I do it anyway. I uually have success with them. I feel that a heating mat is a must.

just my 2 cents worth........10 days in a pot is WAY to long......7 is about when seedlings go in the ground here
