This is my first year trying to grow pumpkins inside with the heat mat and 4' flourescent lights. I experimented last week and the seeds grew tall and skinny where they would snap easily in the wind. What do I need to change to have the plants grow normally, meaning shorter and thicker stems? FYI= I had the heat mats and lights on 24/7 for 4 days straight.

BP, after the seed is sprouted,(as soon as you can see any type of movement in the soil) take off the heat, and close to the lights!!! Sounds like you are doing heat & light in the same area!!! Needs to be two different areas!!! Heat to sprout, then no heat & light real close (2" or less) to new sprout growth!!! Hope this helps!!! Peace, Wayne PS...congrats, on doing experiments!!! Also, would try 18/6 with lights after some movement, small fan will help to develope strength!!! Grow em BIG!!! Once cot's are visible, and growin goodly, first true leaf will appear... a couple days of increased (outside) sunlight is a good thing...more hours each day, to help harden em off to what will be outdoor conditions!!!

If your light is a true grow light and adjustable, lower it till it's nearly touching the plant.

good to know as I have the light about 18" above the plants because of my setup with the walls. That should make them grow normally instead of tall and skinny?
