Check out this site: (http://plantsinmotion.bio.indiana.edu/plantmotion/earlygrowth/germination/germ.html) The text from the site is informative; it talks about the role of water when the seeds imbibe moisture (what a cool term, "imbibe"!), and the need for light just after emergence. Also has a very cool video (click on "germination" then "corn"). Very informative! Ain't science cool? This supports something I've worried over when it comes to the papertowel method of germinating- wouldn't it be better to keep them pointed down? You can still use the papertowel, just rig it tip down. And I also worry about sealing the papertowel. These processes need oxygen. I can't, nor want to, argue with those folks who use the paper towel method and your good experience, but I am wondering!
