I'm an inexperianced gardner, never tried this before. I ordered some seeds online as I couldn't find them in the store.
Is it too late in the season? Any advice is appreciated. We
have a small garden on the side of our house, I was thinking of starting it there.

I hope you found a short season variety. I don't see how you can get any giants grown with this late of a start before the fall frosts. If you are determined you can probably get something this year if you plant jack be little's or baby boo. Both of these are miniature varieties and seem to mature early in my patch. I would start planning for next year and amending the soil. Test for pH at the least and amend as needed with lime or sulfur and start adding organic matter. Search the archives of this site for more good information, and good luck.

OK when you say small garden on the side of your house, what are we talking? If you intend on planting atlantic giants you need a large area, at least 10' x 20', preferably 20' x 25'or larger for each plant. Shannon

You may not get much in the line of fruit starting this late. But for a child to see how the plant grows can't hurt even this late. If he enjoys the experience, you can use it to his advantage again next year.

If you want a big one you need a big garden 20x20 or mabey 15x15. Soak the seed in water file the edges and plant in april. make your soil good. pollinate in july. watch it grow realy big. When the beast is ripe sit and stare and say "How do i move this 300 pound pumpkin???" If you want i will email you a care sheet on atlantic giants?
