Same as with pumpkins-around 85 gets them to pop just fine.

They actually germinate at around 50 degrees So anything warmer than that

I tried starting them inside in small plastic cups-even though I was told they don't transplant well. Corn seed maggots,mice, squirrels and yes birds like the small seedlings. If I'm using my seeds I use the paper towel method and plant multiple per site. But if I'm starting out of someone elses biggen such as zappas and rose from last year then I try to give them a better chance. As linus mentioned they'll sprout with soil temps in the 50's. Ive got a small row of zappa / rose offspring and they do well transplanted early

I transplant after they are close to a foot. If I don't protect them with netting/wire when planted from seed outside every critter there is eats them. Seem to be fine after a few true leaves show up.
