My 794 Wronski, 519 Staring, and 156 Gerry all 03' seeds had no trouble putting out 1" root/radical in about 38hours. My 534.8 Andrews is a 01' seed and its radical has not started to gain any length at all but its gotten quite a bit fatter an it has popped the seed coat open (after about 60 hours). 2 other 534's I started also are growing like this, one thing I noticed is that the very tip off all of them was light brown in color (VERY small and barely noticeable). I was wondering if this is normal for older seeds to start like this or not?

Look closely and make sure the shell isn't "choking" the radicle. Sometimes that happens so it gets fat but not long so you may have to help the seed shell open up if that's the case.

Took a peak at it again today, the "fat" radical seems to be the Plant stem and the root section isn't growing at all, its about 1/2" long now and it looks like its starting to sprout tiny little roots out of the stem. its now 96 hours after start of soaking. my other 3 plants are poking out of the soil already.

i suppose that the brownish tip on any root is a bad thing, but if other roots are forming to take the place of the main one, go with that, just like you would if the main vine was damaged and you had to let a secondary take over.

i JUST TODAY, and probably by accident just before tossing them out, got 3 seeds, all the same, to sprout using the Zip-Loc bag and wet paper towel trick. one root was about an inch long, the next was 3/4" and a little brownish, and the third was quite fat with only a little bit of the root protruding-----so i guess i got the best or worst of all three worlds! anyway, i tossed-out the fatty-rooted one,
and planted the other two in the same peat pot, to see how they'll do. they were my own seeds from '02. good luck-'pal2

and, i do not think older seeds sprouting should look any different from ones from '03....except they might take a little longer. but, i'll bet there are differing opinions...

all is good it seems, Its growing quite well now, the tap root never got much bigger but the roots that sprouted out the sides of the stem took over nicely. Its starting to pick up some decent growth now. I might be setting one of my friends up with one of your seeds also, he said he wants to grow a "decent" size jack-o-lantern.
