This season has already been a baptism of fire. Started with a trial run to test the new grow tent with a positive 4/4 success rate then swiftly moved on to this year’s contenders. All started well with the 1905 out of the blocks in less than 3 days, followed by one of the 2195’s a day later, both are doing well. Then a dose of failure with the 2112, 2016, and remaining 2195 no show's and both 1641’s with 70% rotten cots. Thinking it couldn’t get much worse the 1477, planted as contingency germinated without its cots, therefore I planted extra contingency with the 2356 and the 2000 (update to follow). I could do with a bit of luck please and perhaps a new plan for next year.

First of the sunflower beds direct sown. I'm going early this year as I typically don't start until the 2nd week of May. The third bed is off-camera where I grew last years 5.8m. The 5.8m had an incredibly long growing season so I'm going to cross that with the 20" 3 Brown.

I wanted to run a small trial to inform my own seed starting approach, driven by the problems that blighted the start of my season and a scientific curiosity. As depicted below, I soaked 4 seeds from last year's fruit in 5 different solutions. Each mix used a base of preboiled water (10ml) with either seaweed or Gibberellic Acid added of various strengths. Seeds were soaked for 2hrs and planted in a mix of clover peat (sieved) containing AZOS and Mycorrhizae.

Some good news, the 1477 Caspers has made a miraculous recovery as has the 1641, although the latter is only just alive. I like a challenge so I hope the 1641 pulls through. The 2000 Paton is looking strong and the 1800 Rose has joined the party after a late introduction.

I have 3 patches here in the UK, each 6 x 8m (500 sq ft) in size. In terms of planting, I'm behind where I wanted to be, therefore, and based on a potential frost next week I'm set for May 1st. Not ideal, however, and since I don't have power I'm taking a careful approach.

Day 10 and 11, (no day 9). Bringing the limited scope, highly floored experiment to an end. My main observation is that there’s perhaps an optimal seaweed dilution to be had, more is not less in this case. The Gibberellic Acid solution certainly produced stronger plants although they did germinate quicker which gave them a growth advantage over the 11 days. Seed germination using Gibberellic Acid was low, only 50%. Time depending I might rerun the test in the next few weeks.

Not a great week for the big yellows, all three remaining plants in the main bed have started flower initiation, even seed 'C' which I was convinced would go well into September. The Sunflower patch at 82 days after germination
The higher temperatures in the UK are certainly helping the yellows grow, with more hot weather between 36 and 38 degrees forecast for Monday & Tuesday, then dropping to 20'ish thereafter.
After surviving an early mice attack just a few days after germination (cotyledons eaten), one of the backup plants grew a healthy 53cm taller. this week The backup plants could yet be this year's best. The wide flower head Rose 25" (bottom left) is a beast, but on the same fertilisation line as the tall varieties so I'm not expecting anything special, like the pumpkins it's an exploratory season.

The Sunflower patch at 89 days after germination
In just two days of hot weather over Monday (37 °C) and Tuesday (36 °C), the yellows produced +50% of their weekly growth total, with an increment of 30cm for each of the Brown plants over this short period, sadly the lower temps from Wednesday onwards (23 °C to 20 °C) resulted in only a modest weekly gain overall.
July 17th to July 24th...
- Brown 'A': 468cm (+58cm)
- Brown 'B' 440cm (+55cm)
- Seed 'B': 380cm (+50cm)
Backup Plants (72*, and 56** days after germination)

The Patch. The Rose is going to be a 500 sqft plant, the Paton only 300 sqft. Regrettably, I tried some Clonex on both plants and found the Paton sensitive to it. While the Rose was Ok, all new growth after the application of Clonex (IBA) on the Paton would grow to a point and then die. New growth coming from further back down the plant and before the Clonex application was fine. You live and learn.

Finally picked the Brown A, standing tall @ 5.6m and below my PB. The head from this plant was 17" wide and 3.3kg in weight. The Brown B produced multiple flowers heads for a terminal height of 5.5m, although additional heads took it above 5.9m, not that that changes much. We go again next year.

The wheel hit the scales at 213.2kg (470lbs). Looks a lot smaller on the big stage

Nice turnout @ Malvern, and great to meet the competition. Vince, Nick, Curtis, and Mark B. Talking of Mark I think there's a WR FP somewhere around here !

Nice assortment of Marrow's on show, two of which came from the same allotment in Shrewsbury as the Wheel. Well done to Ian Timmins, like me a first-time exhibitor at Malvern.

Another view of the National Giant Veg Champs marquee and Curtis carefully landing his entry. I think he said he grew it from the 2158.3 Cutrupi (2183.7 Mendi 2019 x 1501 VanderWielen 2017) although I didn't ask what he crossed it with... Vince's big one not on screen was from the 2015 Ford if I'm not mistaken. Not sure of the final standings as the show starts tomorrow, however, and pending any late comers it looks like Curtis topping the leaderboard followed by Vince in 2nd.

Spring is a long way away so I decided to have a play with my own diy hydroponics rig. My 470 (wheel) is well ahead of the 1905 x self cross, as the next image will support.

The solution is Canna A + B. The 470 has a much bigger root mass than the 1905 x self, for 4 days after germination. Interesting to see what normally happens under the dirt.

Reboot of my winter hydroponics project. Therefore out with my DIY rig and in with some 20ltr OxyPots. On the Christmas list is a PH an PPM/EC monitor as I’m flying blind in terms of dialing in the nutrient levels. Both plants are certainly not at their optimum. Interesting experience so far, but will I have a Pumpkin/Sunflower for spring 2023. LED lights are at 40% to cushion my £360 monthly Electric and Gas bill.

The winter hydroponics project continues into December and we have at last a female flower, although no way of pollenating it (parthenocarpy??). Will it be a 3, 4, or 5 lobber? Or will it be one of those snarly things. We keep going, albeit still failing to find the right nutrient levels... Merry Christmas everyone !

Since I didn't have a male flower my winter grow project has turned into an artificial parthenocarpy trial using a solution of gibberellic acid. I have low confidence this will work, it is however worth a try and you never know I might learn something along the way. Picture is my 470 wheel (2000 Paton x Rose 1905) 5 Days After Anthesis (DAA).
Happy New Year !
