It’s time for a Plant update! I’ve been slacking this year on updates but I’ll keep you updated every week starting NOW! Wow. This has got to be the best start I’ve ever had. This is one of my 1184.5s shown in this picture. She is the most aggressive plant I’ve grown and I couldn’t be any happier! Just about a month old.

As mentioned in April I made the decision to grow 3 plants this year in this 2400 SF patch. My 1184.5 shown in the previous post will be getting 1,000 SF to grow in. This is a SECOND 1184.5 that I will be growing. So two of my 1184.5s this year. She’s looking fantastic with the secondary’s starting to take off under those leaves. She will be getting about 700 SF to grow in.

First pumpkin of the season pollinated this morning on the 1223.5 Norm Gansert! Man this plant is once again growing great as it did in 2017 for me with my estimated 1275 pounder. A nice 4 lober on it at about 16 feet with 16 secondary’s behind it. My est 1275 pounder in 2017 was at 13 feet with 16 secondary’s behind it. Hmmm. Will see if this will be my keeper. I have two more close to the tip opening in the next 5-10 days. Let it begin!

Over the winter I bought some giant eggplant seeds in an auction that are a strain of the WR at just over 6 pounds. We’ll see how close I can get to the record this year! I decided to grow them in 20 gal trash cans with pro mix as the root system doesn’t take up much space like a pumpkin does. The trash cans also help me keep the nutrients in their system longer. They are looking great so far

Decided to go for it on the 1223.5 Norm Gansert! This plant is doing exactly what it did in 2017 for me that produced my estimated 1275 pounder. This pumpkin is 8 days old at 16 feet with 16 secondary’s behind it. Night temperatures in the 40s the last 5 nights haven’t been helping but she’s looking good. Same distance and secondary’s as my 1275 pounder. I’ll let this plant fill in the rest of the 600-700 SF area it has to grow in. Won’t be long! Yesterday I lost a secondary on my 1184. I came home from work and half the leaves were wilting. I cut the vine and noticed rot throughout the vine on the inside. I then found a leaf node that was rotten so the rot likely came from that leaf node and traveled through the vine. I chased the rot and came to clean vine but decided to just cut the entire secondary as there was only 4 feet of it and didn’t want to risk it going into the main vine

The 1223.5 Gansert is a stunner. Closing in on 800 pounds. Slowing down big time but still pushing. Can we crack 1,000? Time will tell! I’ll try and take the HD award with her at the Vermont weighoff at the end of September

You can clearly see the blanket line. I’ll be uncovering her during the day to get the color by the stem all the way around the pumpkin

It’s been a tough week in the patch but I’ve got some good news that I certainly didn’t think I’d have after the Sunday disaster. First off. It’s not over as I thought it was on Sunday. I have several diseases and insect infestations in the patch BUT nothing that will likely go directly into the pumpkin and rot the pumpkin out. In previous years I’ve had disease that completely rots out the pumpkins and wipes out the plants but that does not seem to be the case as I previously thought on Sunday. What have I done since Sunday? I’ve been drenching and spraying the patch with several fungicides and pesticides. Now this won’t eliminate the diseases I’m dealing with but it will suppress it and keep the pumpkins hopefully growing which they currently are and have put on the pounds over the last few days. I’ll have to stay on top of the fungicides and pesticides until the end of September to keep them alive! Not giving up is key in this situation. Let’s do this and get them to the end!

On Friday I’ll be harvesting this beauty to bring to the Vermont Giant Pumpkin Growers weigh off up in Vermont on Saturday! She will be the first of the two pumpkins to make the big comeback from last year. This beauty is estimated at just over 800 pounds.

Let’s go! My pumpkin came in at a whopping 908.5 pounds at the Sam Mazzas Farm Weigh off in Colchester Vermont to make the HUGE comeback from last year and took 11th place out of 22 pumpkins. Grown off the 1223.5 Gansert. Bigger than what I estimated it at. One of the biggest pumpkins I’ve grown yet and we’re not done yet!

Today is the day! I will be headed to the @topsfieldfair for the 7th year in a row with a giant pumpkin! Last year I only had a 300 pounder but the comeback I promised for this year has become a reality! My PB stands at 1184.5 back in 2020. We’ll see if I can beat it but either way a huge accomplishment in the patch this year! Hope to see you at 4 PM today in the Arena!

Some might say pumpkin season is over but I’ve still got my biggest pumpkin I’ve ever grown on display with my Christmas lights! (Over 50,000). I replicated the pumpkin patch with wrapping green lights around bittersweet vines in the walkthrough display with the vine and pvc pumpkins stretching a few hundred feet from the driveway to the pumpkin!
