CO2 Conclusions Part 2 of 2…
-When (time of day) Do You Add It? The controller senses when there is enough light for the plant to perform photosynthesis and will only dose at this time. However, if the vents are open and the fan is on the controller will recognize this and go into idle mode until the vents close. However, typically the system is on from sun rise until 9:30am and then again from 6pm until sunset. During the heat of the day the vent fan is typically on so the CO2 level is ambient (~400ppm).
-Where Do You Get the Bottles? Grow shops typically have the smaller 20lb bottle, but for this area the 50lb bottles are used. *The weight is of the CO2 only and not the CO2 + bottle. A full 20lb bottle weighs about 45lbs and a 50lb bottle weighs 175lbs. For the larger sized bottles, a commercial welding gas supplier is a good place to start looking. It is also best to rent the bottles and not purchase one as they need continually updated pressure certifications so renting may cost a little each day, but it comes out less than the initial bottle purchase and continual certifications needed.
-Why do you use a compressed bottle system and not a burner? Burners can add the same amount of CO2 as the bottle system, but with the burner comes heat and humidity. These are two byproducts that I do not want to add to my space as the heat is often needed at night when the CO2 can not be used by the plant. Also, the plant transpires enough water so I do not need to add any more.
-How Long do you add it during the season? It is started at initial seedling transplant to the outside soil and will run until the pumpkin is about 20-30 days old as this is typically when the plant fills the growing area. Remember it is more about the plant than the pumpkin, but the pumpkin age typically correlates with the plant size.
