CO2 Conclusions Part 1 of 2…

I often get asked questions about carbon dioxide enrichment since I have been using it for multiple years and doing plant comparisons in my own growing space and also comparing to other growers. From this data some answers to common questions can be addressed despite not having a large-scale scientific study.

-What Advantage Does It Provide? (Why add it?)
Quicker plant and root growth without the side effects that excessive nitrogen (bloating and speed plant aging) can have.

-What are the basic required equipment to do this?
CO2 Controller with sensor, Compressed CO2 bottle, Regulator

-What are your target levels?
800-1200ppm with 1000ppm being the main target number

-Is it safe to be in the growing area?
Yes, since the max target level is 1200ppm. At levels above 3,000-5,000 ppm is where it can become a concern to humans.

-How Many Days Does It Gain?
This can be harder to pinpoint, but through years of comparisons and also using other general area growers as a comparison, it seems the CO2 enrichment gains 10-15 days. Which essentially means if a grower starts their seeds on April 1st with no plans of CO2 enrichment, another grower who is using CO2 enrichment can start about 2-weeks later and still have the same plant size at pollination, but on a younger plant.

-Does it Make the Pumpkin Grow Better and/or Go Heavy?
CO2 enrichment does not help the pumpkin grow any better, nor does it help/improve any chance at percent over or under chart.

-How Do You Add It?
A 100ft. 1/8” tube with holes about every 12” is placed in a ring on the ground and around the pumpkin plant which is directly connected to the regulator on the CO2 bottle.
