Cover Crop = Northeast Mix Turf Grass Seed

Many growers select mustard, buckwheat, rye or other typical cover crop seeds, but the reason for the turf grass selection is that is establishes well and can remain until next spring with very easy and minimal care.

Mustard has disease suppression abilities, but has to be managed and cut down at a specific time and then incorporated into the soil which would then need to be followed by a winter cover crop.

Buckwheat is quick to germinate, easy to knock down and can bring in many beneficial insects, but would also need a winter cover crop added.

Rye (specifically Winter Rye) does best in cool to cold weather so this would not establish well this time of year.

Turf Grass is the most expensive option, but it does offer good soil coverage, thick root structure and can tolerate mowing which makes the care of it very easy. Many options with-in this category, but the sun and shade or Northeast mix are the two options that tend to perform best over the long term. Also, if the area is not grown in next year the turf grass will not need any extra attention or replanting. If the area is grown in, then an early season tilling and covering will make it seem like it was never planted.
