Good and bad bushel gourd seeds. The good ones are upper left. The bad ones (lower right) do look different, but its hard to tell them apart when they are mixed together.
I sorted them visually but also used a gram scale (and broke many open) to determine the ones that were not developed. (There's no embryo inside them.)
In total about 15% were no good. There's other ways to determine viability, like a drop test, or maybe a float test. But they can just be visually sorted once you know what to look for.
