Anytime I have taken real garden soil and put it in a container, that is what happens to me too. Root rot! I don't know what causes that. It might be is because it is to waterlogged like Luke mentioned.

Other factors that I have seen affect the health of the roots. High salts, Aka too much fertility. Cool and wet soil conditions

All the plants have been at about the same saturation and these are indoors so the temps are somewhat steady. Two of the garden dirt tubes are performing evenly with the store bought potting mix. The one in back is performing poorly due to a lack of nutrients. Its been a useful test, maybe not as useful as sending 4 soil samples to the lab. But cheaper. I'm learning some things, realizing some things. And coming up with new ideas.
