Oh boy am I late in starting a diary this year. It wouldn’t be the same if I skipped a year and had nothing to look back on when the old noodle starts to slip a bit. While everyone is posting there emerging AGs I better catch up. Hmmm the fall ended on a good a good note with Andy stopping by our hunting club with his North American winner. What a beast !!

Monday, May 23 View Page
Winter…. Not my favorite season any more but Val and I were able to get out for some Ice fishing. Atta girl Val !!

Monday, May 23 View Page
January. Well a sad month for us. I lost my brother Scott. 50 years of diabetes took its toll on him. He chose to live life his way and you have to respect that. He left no stones unturned.

Monday, May 23 View Page
Scott visited often. He loved the Big MOMATE tomatoes.

Monday, May 23 View Page
Life is short folks. We are all in line and you never know when your number will be called. Thanks for the memories brother !

Monday, May 23 View Page
Spring finally came and if was easy to pick out the seed I wanted to plant. Thanks to Andy for sending me a couple from his North American winner. It’s always a good feeling when the one you want to grow germinates. The season begins. My seedlings looked good this year. Time to harden them off for a May plant date.

Monday, May 23 View Page
Ahhh yes. Another welcome sign of spring it’s Turkey season. My son Alex was home for a break so come on Val. We are going for it !! It’s a tradition.

Monday, May 23 View Page
Hell yeah. Gobble gobble.

Monday, May 23 View Page
The plants are off to a good start by Ned standards. I am thankful for the shelters John Roba gave me. They are a big time saver and I am able to put some heat in them. It’s rare for me to get a June pollination but we may be headed that direction if all goes well.

Monday, May 23 View Page
I found this book on straw bale gardening. I will give it a go near the house to see if it works as good as advertised. Hell,no soil needed and no weeding with a soaker hose to water. Sounds good to me.

Monday, May 23 View Page
You condition the bales with a nitrogen rich regimen in between soaking them and in 12 days you are ready to plant. We shall see. If it makes more room in the patch for pumpkins and tomatoes it’s a win.

Monday, May 23 View Page
And patch dog Maggie is all muscled up this year and ready to defend our turf. She has turned into a beautiful Shepherd. Come on Mr. woodchuck just try me, don’t make me get out of dads chair.

Wednesday, June 1 View Page
We survived the Memorial Day heat wave and it looks like I didn’t fry my plants. I went with a non orange in the patch this year because Jay was kind enough to send a seed and his 1822 looked like a boulder in the pics. It started out with a kink and looked like it may flat vine but it has straightened out and wanting to throw out some secondaries now. It looks good to me.

Wednesday, June 1 View Page
My other two main plants are Andys monster off of the 1885 werner and my own also off of the 1885, albeit a mini me version of his 2365. Here is the 2365 which by all accounts is as big of a plant I have had for June 1. Now I just need some secondaries to kick in gear.

Wednesday, June 1 View Page
No you aren’t seeing double here is my 839. It has been peeking over at the 2365 and so far it’s a mirror image. Monkey see monkey do.

Wednesday, June 1 View Page
I am having fun playing with my Straw Bale vegetable garden. It is quite interesting. I bent cattle fence panel over to allow soMe beans and cukes to have their way to hang. We shall see if it works.

Wednesday, June 1 View Page
All planted now. It should be weed free and not a lot of effort from here on.

Wednesday, June 1 View Page
Ugggh same pic.

Wednesday, June 1 View Page
We took a break from the patch to visit Bethel and a trip down memory lane as The Who was playing at the original Woodstock. It’s a beautiful place and it was packed.

Wednesday, June 1 View Page
Tailgating is as good as the show. You go Val !!

Wednesday, June 1 View Page
On the list this week is patch cleanup and more tilling. With no tractor here it’s been a pain to keep up with the tilling and weed control. My patch is shrinking and I need to clear out the edges. I have Giant maters still in cups if team 1 is going to compete in the Challenge. They need to get in the dirt NOW.

Wednesday, June 1 View Page
It’s a nice time of year with the unofficial start of summer. You have to enjoy it because it will go fast. These blooms will start to fade soon.

Wednesday, June 1 View Page
Here is another shot of Andys monster for all of you that are growing one. Now my friend Bob is no small French fry.

Tuesday, June 7 View Page
Ahhhh warm weather is here and the butterflies are back. It’s a good time of year.

Tuesday, June 7 View Page
I took the plastic off of the pumpkins. They can use a little sunshine and green up a bit and see if I can get the secondary vines moving.

Tuesday, June 7 View Page
Andys 2365 and my 839 continue to look a like. They have about 8 ft vines I would guess with the first male flowers arriving.

Tuesday, June 7 View Page
The 1822 Yohe has been growing fast and has the biggest secondary vines of the 3 main plants.

Tuesday, June 7 View Page
The seeds I planted in the straw bale garden are sprouting now.

Tuesday, June 7 View Page
The veggies are starting to fill in.

Tuesday, June 7 View Page
Val and I had the pleasure of dog watching my daughter Lauren’s pride and joy. We showed him a great time. I wasn’t a good GrandPaw and taught him some bad habits.

Tuesday, June 7 View Page
It was time to get in the game and get the tomatoes in the ground. I picked up a couple pieces of cattle fence to use this year. If Jack does it maybe that is the secret. Soil tilled.

Tuesday, June 7 View Page
Holes dug and secret amendments added. The ones that Porkchop swore me to secrecy. In they go. Let the games begin.

Tuesday, June 7 View Page
I have two rows of maters so far with some of my seeds and a few other chosen ones. I will probably dot a few more around but these were given prime attention. The Laughing Stalks are on their way !!

Tuesday, June 7 View Page
Another 2365 pic to keep you drooling. Val and Maggie got to pose in this one.

Wednesday, June 8 View Page
We had a nice warm rain here in northeastern PA. I had fed before the storm with some newly acquired Kelp courtesy of WOWs excellent service. The plants responded and look happy this morning. I really have to get my fencing in order. It looks a bit like a junk yard down in the old patch.

Thursday, June 16 View Page
The secondary vines are responding now and the plants are starting to hit their stride. They like the open air treatment and the sunshine is greening them up.

Thursday, June 16 View Page
My 839 is holding pace with the 2365. The plants seem to like their breakfast. My 15 year old Little Giant 1/3 hp still does a good job.

Thursday, June 16 View Page
Maters are in with 2 rows of competitive attempts . . Both have wire fencing around them but one seems to have a frequent visitor. It must be small but likes the taste of my plant. I think I will try the McCoy pruning method on these. Thanks mr chippy for getting me started.

Thursday, June 16 View Page
The other side of the patch is fairing much better. I’m liking the looks of these. They are looking like me, short and stocky.

Thursday, June 16 View Page
It won’t be much longer now. Come on Ms MOMATE let’s grow something special

Thursday, June 16 View Page
We had a monsoon last night so I’m sure the patch is a muddy mess. It goes with the territory. Hopefully some dry weather in the forecast and I can sneak in a end of June pollination. My straw bale garden loved the rain. So far so good with this project.

Thursday, June 16 View Page
I forgot to include a pic of the 1822 Yohe. It continues to have the best shape and consistent secondary growth.

Thursday, June 16 View Page
And another 2365 pic to keep you drooling for anyone growing it or the 1885.

Thursday, June 16 View Page
Gas 5.19 in my town and I don’t hear of any end in sight. Ugggggh. Hard to believe.

Thursday, June 16 View Page
I had my 2002 Ranger customized to honor the occasion.

Saturday, June 25 View Page
Last weeks 38 degree night time temps , 30 mile an hour winds and 3 inches of rain put a halt to my earliest ever pollinations. Patch was a muddy mess.

Saturday, June 25 View Page
Starting to dry out now. Secondary’s are coming in place and I should be able to get in there tomorrow. Need to do some vine burying and weed the perimeter around the plants. I will need to do some creative vine placements this year to utilize my plant space. My garden has shrunk with my not getting a full tractor till this year.

Saturday, June 25 View Page
I lost the chances on the wolf and Yohe because of the weather but fingers crossed this one on the 839 will be set. The Wolf should have another in a few days to give me another shot at a June pollination.

Saturday, June 25 View Page
My straw bale garden is hanging in there and the book said Straw Berries do well. I have to agree.

Saturday, June 25 View Page
Val and I went a little crazy with grow boxes on the deck but it’s fun to see anything grow. Royal purple and French Dressing radishes coming in.

Saturday, June 25 View Page
Elephant ears starting to uncoil.

Saturday, June 25 View Page
The A Row of giant tomatoes continue to be the best looking. I am seeing some blossoms starting to form. The plant in front is from the legendary German gardener, Professor Fup. It is one of the 6.11 Fup’s. I am expecting something big from this badass Domingo.

Saturday, June 25 View Page
It’s been a struggle with chipmunks and bunnies this year. I miss our patch cat Texas.

Monday, June 27 View Page
A hot weekend in Honesdale. Val is away to California for a long overdue visit with her mom so Maggie and I are holding down the fort. It was a good time to clean up the patch and do some vine maintenance. Maggie was a good helper.

Maggie found some shade.

Monday, June 27 View Page
Hello Ms Wolf. A perfect 5 lobed beauty was ready this morning. So another rare June pollination for me. Fingers crossed that it sets. The cross with my 839 should be a good one. Time will tell.

Tuesday, June 28 View Page
75 and crisp weather today. The plants likey likey.

Tuesday, June 28 View Page
Day 6 for the 839, so far so good.

Friday, July 8 View Page
Friday morning plant check. I’m liking the green color this year.

Friday, July 8 View Page
The weather has been much better for pollinations this year. Last years heat wreaked havoc and I had a hard time getting things to set. This year everything is a go. Here is two backup 2365’s on secondary vines

Friday, July 8 View Page
The 2365 will be my biggest plant so pedal down for this girl. I have some secondary’s to cover. I don’t like that job. I may call AG teacher to stop by. He could cover all my plants in 5 minutes.

Friday, July 8 View Page
Looking like this will be the keeper. It is crossed with my 839. I may cut the vine after the fruit on this one. We shall see.

Friday, July 8 View Page
The maters are looking good. The A team is still the boss. The plants are growing.

Friday, July 8 View Page
I have some nice Megas forming. It’s not a flower show so hoping like the pumpkins this great weather has some sets brewing. This is on the 6.23 Wixom.

Friday, July 8 View Page
Maggie met a new friend in the yard. Pepe LApew. Great Maggie. At least she likes her hot tub to soap up

Friday, July 8 View Page
Straw bale project is coming along. SoMe things doing better than others.

Friday, July 8 View Page
The leader in the patch at the moment is my 839. It is the earliest pollination so that makes sense. So far the shape looks like her momma and the plan to inject more color into the 1885 looks to be working. She is a nice shade of yellow so far. The blossom was a bit funky so we shall see if she holds her shape.

Monday, July 18 View Page
The patch is filling up. I am about out of room for my 839. It really could have used some more real estate. The 2365 Wolf will be given the most room to see what she can produce. I’m very happen with the condition of the plants at the moment. It looks like we will have some Orange this year as well.

Monday, July 18 View Page
The 839 is growing well but changing shape into a low long and flat top model. I knew the blossom was a bit misshaped so I assume that is the reason. But that’s ok she ks starting to pack on some pounds.

Monday, July 18 View Page
The 2365 is a bit younger and has a more traditional shape. Looking good so far.

Monday, July 18 View Page
I put in one of my seeds from last year to get a porch pumpkin. I liked the cross and expected it to be a nice orange. The cross is the 1552 Young x 1885 werner. This plant is very small and I hadn’t buried any vines or fed it. I have to start giving it some love. She could be a real looker.

Monday, July 18 View Page
Maggie turned 3. So Val made a Spoiled Dog cake and we invited Lauren and cousin Winston over to celebrate.

Monday, July 18 View Page
The cake was a hit.

Monday, July 18 View Page
The maters continue to produce some nice megas which hopefully will turn into some decent fruit. Let’s Roll Team Laughing Stalks.

Monday, July 18 View Page
The straw bale project is looking good as well

I never grew Brussel sprouts before. They seem to like the straw.

Tuesday, August 9 View Page
It’s a heat wave in this part of Pennsylvania pretty much like most of the country. I have been needing to keep my tomato plants healthy. I need to do some trimming and keep an eye on things.

Tuesday, August 9 View Page
I may have a few PB contenders. Let’s hope they stay green for a couple more weeks.

Tuesday, August 9 View Page
I need to reach out to Dr Fup as his Domingo is looking good.

Tuesday, August 9 View Page
I should have entered the 150 sq ft challenge with this one. It is smaller than that and set at 5 ft from the stump.

Tuesday, August 9 View Page
My straw bale garden is filling in and looking pretty healthy. I planted some ornamental gourds to hang on the fencing. They will have some beans as company.

Tuesday, August 9 View Page
I lost the fruit on the end of the main on my 2365 and now have several smaller secondaries growing a porch pumpkin. My 1822 Yohe was looking good but my 2 pumpkins both chose to abort at 30 days when the heat rolled in. I’m down to my 839 for my chance at breaking 1000 pounds. If there is a Bean Bag award, I’m in ! I blame that on the blossom I chose to go with. The seed looks to have some potential and she will be a bright Orange Bean Bag anyway. Will be perfect for photo shots !

Tuesday, August 9 View Page
Wrong pic of dr Fups Domingo. Hoping for some inches in this heat on this one. Need that edit button. Better get some better tights under this one. May have to ask Chop to borrow some of his.

Monday, August 15 View Page
Oh boy the heat wave has some maters starting to blush. Wish they were bigger but it won’t be long til I need to pick.

Monday, August 15 View Page
The World Famous Pittston Tomato Festival starts this week. Maybe Val and I will have to take one of these down to see if we can reclaim our big tomato prize. It’s a four day celebration of the Tomato with 50,000 people in attendance.

Monday, August 15 View Page
My straw bale project is filled in.

Monday, August 15 View Page
Some decorative gourds hanging on the trellis give it a good look.

Monday, August 15 View Page
My red neck neglected long gourd trellis has a couple of candidates. I don’t have much foliage this year. I’m not sure if the one on the left would be considered damaged ?

Monday, August 22 View Page
It’s tomato time. The early ones have flashed and I left them on the vine a little longer than usual. The timing was right this year for the World Famous Pittston Tomato Festival. They are nuts about tomatoes.

Monday, August 22 View Page
The Fup was ready to roll and the 6.23 Wixom said lets do this.

Monday, August 22 View Page
Ok let’s get some weights for the Laughing Stalks. Off to the market little piggies. Ouch thought Dr Fups Domingo was fatter. Well it’s a start.

Monday, August 22 View Page
Wixom 6.23 had a bigger belt size but not as uniform in shape. Lets see what we can squeeze out of her. Better but still not Slammer Like. Will get the ball rolling with a 4.16. To think adding both together is what the Big maters look like. Crazy.

Monday, August 22 View Page
Sooooo let’s roll Val, to Pittston we go ! They have lots of activities in the 4 day Tomato celebration. Nahhh we won’t do this one.

Monday, August 22 View Page
Yeah we will will hang out at this place while we wait for the judging time to start for the tomato categories.

Oh yeah, dust off the shelf Val !!

Monday, August 22 View Page
We will be back next year for sure !

Monday, August 22 View Page
Well what do you now with your big tomatoes now that it’s over. Hmmm hey it’s moms 88th birthday so you make a tomato pie out of one and keep the party rolling. Here is mom with our now 3.86. There is no shame in growing a 3 pound tomato folks. They are big !! Don’t eat this one mom. I like the shape and May save the seeds. No MOMATE this year.

Monday, August 22 View Page
Happy 88th birthday Mom !!

Monday, August 22 View Page
I was looking for the estimation chart in Marv’s book and saw his picture on the same page ! Thanks for making PA proud Marv. You are missed. You would have loved a trip to Pittston.

Monday, August 22 View Page
And so is this guy missed. This was a pic I found on my phone that Zeke had sent me of a nice tomato off of my 3.77 pound Domingo that I had sent him. Thanks for all the hard work that you put in to the Tomato Challenge.

Monday, August 22 View Page
I was thinking of Zeke as I admired the sunflowers we have growing at our hunting club. Last year I entered the bucket challenge and was happy to make the top 10 but I knew we could do better. So armed with some Butler seeds they are doing better this year. They started out slow with some leaves browning but they outgrew their early issues and are stretching high now.

Tuesday, August 23 View Page
A beautiful MOMATE is ready !

Tuesday, August 23 View Page
No help to the Laughing Stalks but will be perfect for BLT’s. The MOMATES are DELICIOUS !

Saturday, September 3 View Page
September is here, where did the summer get to? I’m down to one main pumpkin on my 839 plant. We won’t have a PB this year and I’m in the lazy let the weeds roll mode. I have nothing on my Yohe plant. Sorry jay I really wanted to grow one on that. My 2365 wolf I have let anything that wants to grow on it so will have a few Halloween porch pumpkins. I have given up on most plant care and letting Mother Nature have her way with them. This pumpkin is on what I called my 420 est from last year. If has great orange genetics as it’s the 1552 Young x 1885 werner. Maybe I should have given it more room.

Saturday, September 3 View Page
I have some bigger sunflowers this year. Lauren posed for a pic.

Saturday, September 3 View Page

Val practiced her teaching skills.

Saturday, September 3 View Page
My 839 seed looks to be a good one. I wish I had a bigger plant. The main vine does have a section on it I am powdering and keeping dry. Growth has slowed way down but still increasing. How can you go wrong with the orange gene of the 1885 werner and I crossed it with the 1665 McDonald which was a orange beauty itself. This one will be perfect for the little ones to sit in for a pumpkin picture. It is a stunning orange. I think the divot is the result of the deformed blossom that I went with. One needs to pay more attention to the blossom that you choose to grow out. I would like to see some other pics of funky blossoms that were grown out and the pumpkins that they produced. I did send a few of these seeds out to some top notch growers. I would like to see what the 839 would do given optimum conditions. Hopefully someone else grew it this year.

Saturday, September 3 View Page
You can see the Jimmy Durante snoz on the lower lobe. I’m pretty sure that may have caused the divot in the pumpkin. Maybe someone with more knowledge than me will chime in.

Saturday, September 3 View Page
Here is a nice sauce tomato. A Speckled Roman. I saw the seeds in a catalog this winter. Very tasty, I would plant them again.

Wednesday, September 21 View Page
It looks like my 839 bean bag is about done as a soft spot on the main vine near the pumpkin seems to have stalled it to a crawl. It’s a great shade of orange but no PB for us this year. It was a great grower given the small plant and lack of effort in the second half of the season on my part. I will plant it again and attempt to get all of the moons lined up. We will pick it soon and get some good family photos with it. It may not impress other pumpkin growers on this site but to the average Joe it will be a monster.

Wednesday, September 21 View Page
Hmmm I guess the bag is off of the Cat and Porkchop has mentored a new pumpkin grower in NY and they grew a pretty one on the 839 seed. Way to Grow Todd ! You had a great teacher. Hang in there only a few more sleepless nights until Saratoga. I sure would like to see the events unfold as I hear rumor of some other big orange ones will be there. What do you think Val !! It has been a few years since we have been there.

Ok it’s November loser Ned you better wrap this diary thing up as the flakes are starting to fly. I’m not a Facebook guy so any updating has to be here. This is better than Facebook anyway!

Wednesday, November 16 View Page
The season wasn’t what I dreamed of but so goes the ups and downs of growing these things. My early hopes of having 3 carefree plants and early sets was on track until the Yohe plant was aborting everything and my 2365 main rotted before the pumpkin so I was down to 1 main vine pumpkin on my 839 from last year. The 1885 Werner is the Hottest Seed on the planet so my cross with the flame orange 1665 MacDonald surely is worthy of a grow. Let’s roll 839. All was good with my end of June pollination until I began to notice the divot developing on the top of the pumpkin. Oh well I had to roll with it and now blame it on the deformed blossom it had. I like a good bean so be it. The plant was the smallest of my 3 main plants but the fruit grew at a nice pace. Picking day arrived. Hey my great niece had a perfect place to sit.

Wednesday, November 16 View Page
Grab your neighbor with the tractor, bribe a few friends with some brews and up she went. It’s harvest day.

Wednesday, November 16 View Page
Let’s check the bottom. Wow a nice divot on top and a world class concaved bottom.

Wednesday, November 16 View Page
All good !! On the trailer she goes for our annual venture to Grahamsville NY snd their Giant Pumpkin party. It’s a small fair but they do like their pumpkins. We have made some long lasting friends who bring along their best backyard garden entries.

Uggh oh. It may not be so easy this year as there were some nice pumpkins.

Wednesday, November 16 View Page
My 839 had some legs. I like this pic.

Wednesday, November 16 View Page
The ORANGE in the 839 looked good in the lineup.

Wednesday, November 16 View Page
Everyone wanted to sit in that bean bag. Hell anyone can grow a round pumpkin. It takes talent to grow one with a seat in it.

Wednesday, November 16 View Page
Well hmmmm when one of the bigger pumpkins weighed in at 954 I was thinking we were not winning this year as it was hard to measure mine and when a soft spot was discovered on the main I knew it hadn’t grown in a couple of weeks. I also didn’t know what the divot and the caved in bottom would mean. I was thinking the low 900’s was where she would settle. She was last on the scale and boom 977. She went heavy and earned the King for the day. My Honesdale growing buddy Andy was over the moon at witnessing the victory. Lol a good day was had.

Wednesday, November 16 View Page
I was happy with that and glad that my 839 seed made it to the finish line. Off to NJ she went to spread her orange goodness to all who wanted to see her.

Wednesday, November 16 View Page
I had sent out a few packs of seeds in hopes that someone may also give my 839 a try. I was pleasantly surprised when Porkchop showed me a pic that he had germinated one. Chop ended up giving it to a new pumpkin growing friend who was itching to get in the giant pumpkin growing phenomenon. I sincerely appreciated the updates on his progress and it was as much fun watching my seed grow in his patch as tending to mine. Todd may have been new at Giant pumpkins but he obviously new how to garden.

Wednesday, November 16 View Page
I knew my 839 had potential but wow did it take off in his patch and had the bright orange color that I was hoping for. What a beast Todd grew.

Wednesday, November 16 View Page
I never met Todd but if he is a friend of Porkchop’s….. he should run as fast as he can and get away from that guy. He is CRAZY. Lol. Thanks to Porky for germinating that seed and sharing the journey thru the season.

Wednesday, November 16 View Page
Congrats to Todd Kogut for all the hard work you put in and doing that 839 seed justice. A second place finish in Saratoga at the NY event is something to be proud of. Your 1952.5 was a beauty and at 12 percent heavy will be a seed in demand.

Wednesday, November 16 View Page
Well done !!

Wednesday, November 16 View Page
I will be planting my 839 again next year and maybe I can find a few more of the ORANGE lovers who want to plant it, so just let me know. Let’s see I need to get some seeds to Pork, Andy, Karl, Glenna, Kevin, John, Norm, Steve, Cindy, Ron, Joe, Ian, Glenn, Tony, Bubba. Todd, Larry, Quinn ,Jack.Jay Lol. Just send me a msg and the 839 is on its way. Isn’t it a great hobby when you can be recognized by your first name only. My 977 found one more pumpkin model. I had to find the smallest I could to make it look as big as possible. I think I found her. Sweet dreams pumpkin growers. Let’s hope it’s not a long winter.
