I have thought about it and I may have the answer. Never can be guaranteed but I have a possible answer of what happened. So there was a soft area in the vine behind the pumpkin. A SVB dug in and caused it to get really soft. I remover pressing my finger in it and my finger went down. It was all rot in there and brown. Here is my thinking. As the energy flows through the vine it HIT the contaminated area the rotted area and it carried on Bacteria into the pumpkin! Pumpkins can drink gallons of water a day! So think about it all that infected bacteria going into the pumpkin gallons a day. I opened the pumpkin up and oh boy i remember there was soup halfway filled up in the pumpkin! I can’t think of another way it could’ve been that soupy. There was no holes in the pumpkin and the bottom had no holes in it so that is the only way I can think on how it could’ve rotted.   Sunday, January 14 View Page MY 2018 thinking for ferts! My plan was to just watch the show. I saw something in lot 225. It was the 2252 Paton (2016) 21% heavy! Grown from the 1975 Wallace. I went ahead and bidded, after going back and forth I won the bid. I got a good deal on it. Over the past few months I was having trouble which seeds to do. Since I got that seed I am going to do that one! The genetics are very good. It is the 8th biggest pumpkin ever grown 2018 Lineup 2252 PATON (2016) EST 1275 Swenson (2017 Lineup could change If some major issues happen with a seed but I think they will work out just fine ;)   Saturday, January 20 View Page I will not be posting any more pumpkin stuff until April on bigpumpkins, all I can say now is expect some big changes during the 2018 Season!!   Monday, January 22 View Page I can’t resist! I will be posting pumpkin patch updates! Stay tuned!   Monday, January 22 View Page Ok, I am now deciding on what vine pattern I will use for the 2018 growing season. I have 3 options I drew out. As you can see I will most likely be using a second hooo house.   Monday, January 22 View Page Option 1! The patch is about 1522 SF in total. In this option the 2252 Paton would be getting 31 feet of length by 31 feet wide! The Est 1275 swenson would have a smaller area. 33 feet long in this scenario and 17 feet wide. The first is that the 1275 main vine would most likely have to be turned and curved because there would only be 12 feet from the hoop house until it reaches the end of the space it's in. I am keeping the peppers in the growing tent with the Led light. This picture is from my green and red bell peppers. I have over 12 buds on it. Right now there is 1 flower that opened a day ago. It measures 28 inches tall and no signs of blooming! Last years sunflower was around 34 inches. Can I beat it? The 1275 was the first one to get a root on it. Took 3 days which made me happy. I plan on keeping the plant for awhile and see how it grows since I will be growing it this year. Waiting to see if the 514 and the 539.5 germinate   Saturday, February 3 View Page Here is the seed. All I did was sand the seed and I got all the air bubbles out by pushing on it a little under water. Got wet but I did not soak it for a few hours like other growers do. I then stuck it in soil and here it is with a root. I’m expirementing. With my 514 i sanded it. I did not soak it at all or get the air bubbles out. With my 539.5 I just stuck it in the soil. So far the sand meathod with getting the air bubbles out seems to work for me, I have them on a heating pad at around 77-80 degrees.   Tuesday, February 6 View Page The 1275 has sprouted! Good deal.   Sunday, February 25 View Page The giant pumpkin season is coming up quick. I had ideas where I wanted to do a long gourd and a bushel gourd. I did not have the space so I was heading towards a long gourd since I could build a cheap trellis out of PVC pipe. I added up the money and I had enough but I forgot 1 thing. I forgot to add the sand! My soil gets compacted pretty easily in my pumpkin patch so sand will help my pumpkin patch. So I was deciding if I should toss the sand out or go with a trellis for a long gourd. I decited to forget about the long gourd this year. I want a big a** pumpkin. After a disapointing pumpkin year last year I want to put all my effert into the pumpkins. My goal this year is a 1500 Pound pumpkin but I will be happy with just getting a pumpkin to the scales. There were some raffle tickets with some seeds you could win. I put two tickets in the 2363. There were about 30 raffle tickets in there. I won! Could not believe the luck I just had gotten. Also got the 1297 holland. my lineup has changed a bit I am still doing my 1275. I will do the 2252 as a backup. I got lucky winning the 2363 and the 1297. I will be growing the 2363 now this year! It was a hard decision. It really really was. I talked to a few friends on FB and one of my really good friends Hayden. I had the 2032 Mathison in my back pocket. I was wondering if I should grow that with the 2363. I decided yes. Here is why. The 2032 has amazing genetics. Amazing. It has grown many whoppers, I have not gotten a pumpkin to the scales in 2 years! I want a good chance! My 1275 rotted a week before the fair. It is not proven it is not. I threw it under the bus but I feel like it was a good decision. I will be growing two very good seeds. Here it is. Then it’s go time! I plan to plant sometime the first week of May, it is a little disappointing that my 1275 is slow and weak. The 1223.5 the plant is was grown from was aggressive, Oh well. It was grown in Alaska Where it’s usually wet there. I have a good climate where I am. Nice temps. That would give it somewhere between the 10th and 13th of June to open. It would have about 106 days to grow until the Topsfield. That is a long time BUT I would get my peak growth in like August and that’s better because in September it’s cooler. I could gain a good amount of pounds pollinating early. I would still pollinate others just in case and the 2363 was pollinated at 10 feet with that amount of time on the vine I believe with around that many secondary’s. I did not what to say these words for the second year in a row but my 2363 Holland is going down. I measured 603 pounds yesterday morning. My goal is this year was 1500 pounds. 2363 Holland was my only chance. I wanted to take a pumpkin to RI. That’s gone. Let’s hope the 1791 Werner keeps growing so I have one for topsfield. What a disappointment   Sunday, July 29 View Page MORNING UPDATE ——- Is the 2363 Holland pumpkin showing signs of life? Hello and Good morning everyone. As I posted a few days ago I told you that the 2363 had stopped growing. That’s what it looked like when I measured. Also it was wobbling a scary amount. But that may of just been the shape and how the pumpkin was a foot off the board. I have placed a cup next to the pumpkin but with the pumpkin not touching it. This morning I woke up and the pumpkin was touching it. I will continue to monitor the 2363. The patch is currently in Emergency Mode ?? yesterday I lost 3 secondary vines to phytoptoro. 2 of those I cut in half at the infection I need to try to save energy. I lost two completely on Friday. I am away in NH today so when I get home this afternoon I expect to lose more. And I need to watch the 1791. I am going to apply fungicides tonight. Going heavy on those. Let’s see if that kills the disease. I was 100% it was over a few days ago. The pumpkin is telling me it’s still alive. I will update again later. Have a good day.   Sunday, July 29 View Page AFTERNOON UPDATE -Good news! -update! I got home from NH. I was expecting to lose a few secondary’s from this disease. I was shocked. No leaves wilted. Very good sign! I am fighting my way through this, let’s see who wins. the threat is still there. Soil is dryer. I am applying fungicides tonight and that includes water. So the disease, photophora may affect the leaves again after the application. I am very happy I did not lose any vines today. Threat is definitely still there though. Charlie Lopresti showed me around and it was an amazing experience! Had a great time. I got to watch a live broadcast which I’ve never experienced before, he showed me all the tools about weather. Very nice out today. Since I have to start in a brand new patch it’s a lot of work. This patch is 5-7 feet away from the diseased one. I am going to leave 10 feet separation. I am not getting diseased again!! Veggies were here last year and they were great so I don’t think I will have issues. Hopefully the part I am expanding is disease free. Lots of work to do to get the patch ready for the 2019 season. That will be my 4th season of growing these giants   Monday, December 31 View Page The new 2019 pumpkin patch is starting to come together! Cleared out the brush, now I need to blow the leaves. Total measurement of patch. 45 feet long and 41 feet wide. = 1800 SF. My plan is to do two plants and those two plants will get around 750 SF. I will be turning the vines so a little bigger. And I’m not forgetting about the bushel gourd! That will get around 300 SF. Then my other veggies will go on the side of the patch   Monday, December 31 View Page Here is the stupid diseased patch.
