In theory the root will grow in the middle. I'm confident in onion growing as I have been successful year after year. This is the first year I have started heavy onions from seed or have attempted heavy onions for that matter. Did both. Ordered the Alisa Craig variety from a couple of sources. These are from Johnny's Selected Seeds and were the largest so went with those. I sort through the bunches and only plant the largest ones. I find that small starts grow small onions and the largest grow the largest. Kind of makes sense. I picked 33 to put into the ground.   Saturday, March 24 View Page I also received onion bunches from Jung's. They were tiny so didn't use them, only their fertilizer at planting. Needless to say I have many many left over onion starts I will stash around the garden for the purpose of eating.   Saturday, March 24 View Page Now these are Walla Walla onions. Not for heavy's, just for eating. During the Summer I purposely leave a few of the smaller Walla Walla's in the garden just for the purpose of division. The old onion rots during the Fall and Winter then divides into 5-10 separate one's. I separate them and only plant the largest. These are my favorite for eating.   Saturday, March 24 View Page Some people are unsuccessful at planting onions because of a couple of basic reasons. In my area (Oregon) I like to get them started early. Before April. It is too early for tilling because the soil is wet, so I use the broadfork to loosen the soil, and at the same time adding new stuff. My soil is pretty loose anyway because I have been making and adding to it for 25 years. Perlite, coir, ect. The other reason is that growers will plant the bulb too deep. They will just rot and die. That bulb needs to be just under the surface. I dig a deep hole and add some fertilizer. Then backfill with a little soil and carefully lift the onion so the roots stay deep and straighten out. Takes a little practice but you will not lose very many to rot. Oh, and sprinkle slug bate around the perimeter. Except its offspring the 8.22 Marley Domingo is nearly a no show, lower left 1/5, right next to its parent the 5.95 Konieczny. So I'm figuring if you can get these up it will be a special seed and plant. I dug down a little and see a couple more trying to emerge. At least I got one. These are for season long feeding. Not available yet. I will plant 4 identical San Marzano tomato plants started by seed. I will put two paks (it is really spelled pak not pack) in the second one from the right. No other fertilizer will be used. I just added fresh garden mix/compost to add something to the soil. Put on the side of my house out of the garden. Soil is not the best there so will be a good experiment. The only other thing added was WOW mycorrhizal inoculant to each planting hole. From time to time I find little chips or worked rocks when I turn the soil. This is the first whole arrowhead I found in the garden. I have found a few arrowheads before in the field and even a whole foot long pestle a couple years back. Mostly I find very sharp knife like scrapers. I increased the distance to 3' all the way around this year so when it was all said and done I ran out of room. Those white things are paper "hot caps" that protect little plants from hot sun and cold nights. Thought I'd give them a try. Each plant has 3 leaves. Missing the cut was the MegaMutt D and Z (sad face) and several of my 6.02's and a LaRue 7.19 and misc. other one's. Anyone in the mid Oregon are want them? It was in the 90's today.   Thursday, July 19 View Page Today I attempted a great tomato cross for next year. Female is a 7.10 Foss BZ. Males are 8.22 Marley (Porkchop) Domingo. Here before the Foss flower opened I pulled off the male parts (Anther cones) so it wouldn't self pollinate. I used tweezers. This exposed the female (stamen). I also dabbed the petals on there encase some pollen fell on them. This is assuming the male and female are ready. If it doesn't take I will try again down the line. This is a cool cross if it works. As planned, I wanted to pollinate most everything around the first of August. By then there is a larger plant and bigger roots by the time of pollination. No first trusses on the main except the ZacHeart #2. Everything else has been waist to nipple high and from the first suckers. There is no exact science to this hobby. Keep trying my friends. On 5-31 in my diary I posted some tomato seedlings growing out of the vent of my little compost bin. Thought I would experiment and put it in the garden. It could of been a cherry tomato, from a 6.23 MegaZac, or many of the throw away tomato's from last year. It's kind of fun! There are two super big megablooms on this plant starting to emerge for pollination in two weeks. The brown spots are from a combo of kelp and Calcium Chloride. Each plant has tomato's growing and covered, all around the same age.
